I voted for McCain - but it's great to live in a country where you get to choose your leader. Just ask the people in Zimbabwe. Or Russia.

For Obama: good luck and God bless.

I agree: 'nuff said. But I did say a few more words on my blog today as the election pertains to history.

Leonard Cohen's poem/song Democracy expresses my state of mind more eloquently that I could never do.

"Democracy is coming to the U.S.A."? Gee, Guillaume, doncha think I thought of that?

It's the second song on my Election 2008 mix -- right after Hail to the Chief (but before I Wanna Grow Up to Be a Politician, If a Song Could Be President and Won't Be Fooled Again). Mind you, Graham Parker's going to have to change the punchline of Durban Poison.

Now if only the people who profess to champion democracy can learn to live with it when it doesn't break their way, both within and without their borders. Of course, as Steve Earle said, questioning your government is the duty of all patriots.

What a radical.

Yeah, I was not original mentioning Cohen's song, but he is after all a great poet. I got it in the head since the beginning of the election. Anyway, I am glad of Obama's election for so many reason, some of them not so often mentioned: it brings back intelligence in power (Obama is an academic and an intellectual) after years of anti-intellectual demagogy, it makes the influence of the Christian fundies diminish greatly and it sends a clear reply to anti-americans around the world.

Academic and an intellectual?

Actually, one of the people Obama reminds me of most is not so much Kennedy (the usual American comparison) as Trudeau, particularly in his early years.

There's that same sense of enthusiasm and hope for change I saw during the years of Trudeaumania.

And while my job as a bookseller has given me a close-up on Obamamania (almost anything with Obama on it has sold right out), I'm not sure how many Americans realize how happy most of the world is with the results. Thing is, the "rest of the world" doesn't want to hate the U.S. In fact, sometimes they seem to cherish its ideals and promises more than Americans do -- which is why they're so disappointed at times.

Well, Obama taught at university (how many presidents did prior to their term in office?), so I would say he is an academic and as intellectual as one can be. I don't know about this Trudeau comparison, I was not born when Trudeau became PM, but it seems to me that the circumstances where they got into powers are very different, and so are the characters. Trudeau did not succeeded a loathed PM. Obama certainly comes from a very different background and is more interested in economy that Trudeau ever was. But I guess they are both intellectuals (but could you consider Trudeau an intellectual?).

Off the top of my head, Woodrow Wilson is the only other president who taught in a university prior to occupying the White House. And, I think, he was our last (only?) PhD.

I guess it's a comment on their attention to detail that the spammers at Lady Detectives India that not just their comment but their entire web site is peppered with grammatical errors.

It's also never occurred to them -- shrewd masters of deduction that they are -- that this blog is not a particularly relevant place to plug their wares, or that it does not welcome spam.

My guess is they're skanky scum-sucking scam artists, definitely not to be trusted. What legit detective agency spams for customers?

Really, any site should have grammatical error free because site content should be unique and interesting for user prospect. I have also analyze that many site webmaster having bad content on their site. Having the site content best you can increase the visitor visibility most and popular your sites.

That last comment is the sort of spam I usually delete right away, but it's so perfect in its ineffectual boneheaded cluelessness that I'm going to let it stand. I swear, Nitin, if you were any stupider, you'd be Palin.
